The Glass Castle: A Memoir | Jeannette Walls

This is the second half of my review on Glass Castle. This memoir is a must-read if you enjoy stories about resilience in the face of adversity and self-determination. In the story I left off with the family arriving in Welch. Life wasn't going to be any easier in Welch, and the children started to understand why Rex didn‘t want to return to his hometown. Jeannette struggled to make friends and took an interest in the school newspaper.

Cole Emes After years of suffering and seeing no change in the near future the kids decided to take matters into their own hands; a escape fund called Oz. Rex steals the first amount but this doesn‘t stop the kids. Lori is the first to take off to the Big Apple; Jeannette after her then Brian and then finally Maureen. Rex and Rose Mary eventually followed their kids to New York as well. 2y

Cole Emes Her parents lived on the streets of NYC but because of their pride and arrogant mindset would not accept any charity, not even Christmas presents. Jeannette made a life for herself and her but still struggled with self acceptance because of her tragic past and with her parents on the streets. They served as a reminder of where she came from. 2y

Cole Emes After Rex‘s death, Jeannette was able to come to terms with her relationships and live a much more happier life. The Glass Castle was written in first-person narrative. Jeannette Walls establishes this by using pronouns such as I, me, we, our, etc. This memoir is truly touching and I would recommend it to almost anyone. 2y

The Flick | Annie Baker

Since my last post of The Flick I have made some progress in the Play. The story continues to encourage me to keep reading and finish the play. From where I left off not much has happened. The owner Steve has basically been forced to sell The Flick to a huge corporation. This is freighting to Avery, Sam and Rose because major companies will not keep actual film movies around. Instead the would move to digital.

Cole Emes The Flick is one of 2 theatres that still show film movies. So the crew now has to fight for film to stay. More and more the relationships between each crew member are becoming more complex. 2y

Cole Emes The play is in a third person omniscient point of view, this is shown by the reader being told the thoughts of the characters and the story is told as if we are watching them. If you like me books that you can relate to as a teenager or just enjoy a good play I‘d recommend this play. (edited) 2y

The Flick by Annie Baker is a play that takes place in a run-down movie theater in the central Massachusetts. I have not yet completed this book but plan to do so. Three underpaid movie theatre employees Avery, Sam and Rose clean the theatres, run the movies, sell tickets, and practically operate the whole movie theatre. We follow as the characters reveal more about themselves and a type of romantic chemistry starts to build between Avery and Rose

Cole Emes This is starting to develop more and more as the story goes on. If you like me books that you can relate to as a teenager or just enjoy a good play I‘d recommend this play. The theme of this play revolves around teenager relationships and workplace drama. We see the three main characters build there relationships more and more as they divulge more of themselves to each other. 2y

Life of Pi | Yann Martel

Since my last post in Life of Pi I have made some progress in the novel. The story continues to encourage me to keep reading and finish the book. Begging from where I left of, Pi‘s family had decided to pack up the zoo and set sail for Canada. Due to India‘s political issues the trip to Canada was now seen as a very solid idea. On June 21, 1977 his family set sail on the cargo ship called Tsimtsum filled with all the zoo animals.

Cole Emes After some time at sea, we are shown Pi clinging to a life boat and invites a tiger on board then jumps back into the sea. We travel back in time to earlier, when Pi is awoken by a loud explosion. He tries to wake his brother but gives up and goes to investigate what caused such a noise. He reached the deck of the ship and is quickly thrown overboard by the crew mates and lands on a lifeboat with a zebra, hyena and a orangutang. 4y

Cole Emes Almost everyone and everything on the ship has died and his family is all gone. ()The hyena eats the the zebra and orangutang and to his surprise Richard Parker (the lion) is still alive and in the boat. He kills the hyena and the lion and Pi try to survive together on the boat in the middle of the ocean. Pi learns to train and master the lion and this allows him survive alone with the lion. 4y

Cole Emes They have reached an island where they stay the night and we still don‘t know Pi intends to survive. If you like books that explore dangerous situations, unlikely survival stories and friendships and relationships being formed this book will be great for you. This novel is written in first person, but from the point of view of two different people. 4y

Cole Emes One of them is the author who explains how he came across this life changing story and that of Pi Patel who tells the events from his own eyes. The author of the book uses “I” to show is that we are seeing this from their eyes. We also get to experience the inner thoughts of both people and their strories. So far I have really enjoyed the book and I will try to complete the novel. 4y

Life of Pi | Yann Martel

In this novel we follow Pi Patel who is a sixteen year old teenage boy who is obsessed with learning about animals and people. The Patel family owns a zoo in a city called Pondicherry which is where Pi learns to love all animals. At a young age Pi was bullied by his classmates daily, they would call him “Pissing Patel”. He had to move schools and with a new attitude and confidence he made a sure this name would not follow him.

Cole Emes Pi is searching for a calling, for meaning and in doing so he gets involved in 3 different religions: Catholicism, Hinduism and Islam. These religions bring him many different ideals, teachings and beliefs. This causes some issues with his mentors as they say you are allowed to practice one religion and one religion only. I have not yet completed this novel but I am looking forward to finishing the amazing story. 4y

Cole Emes The theme of the novel so far is spirituality, faith, religion, morality, and family relations. If you like books that challenge your thoughts, discuss life and brings life changing stories you will throughly enjoy “Life of Pi”. 4y
